- One 4-lb bag of beach glass*.
- One $1 bill with director John Waters' autograph.
(Obtained when he came to speak on campus during my Sophomore year of college in the late 80's.)
Do you know anyone that would want to make jewelry out of this glass?
What is the best way that I should frame this dollar? This is a valuable autograph that luckily has not been exposed to the sun over the years.
* Interesting fact: Beach glass is one of a few objects made valuable by actions of the environment on man-made litter.
It seems pretty clear to me - I mean isn't it obvious! Frame the dollar in a wide wooden frame and then glue the beach glass to the frame. That wasn't so hard was it? Good grief! You then have either an excellent gift for someone very deserving - or a nice piece of bathroom art.
ReplyDeleteRechelle, you are so right! How stupid of me. Good grief! LOL
ReplyDeleteGlad to be of service.
ReplyDeleteIs American money still paper? If so you probably don't want to have it hanging round in a humid environment. Even if it's not the ongoing moisture on the backing of the frame from the bathroom wouldn't be too good for it, I imagine.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a small "treasures" box of keepsakes you could keep it in?
As for the glass, if it's meaningful (ie: you picked it up yourself as a momento of wonderful beach trips could you buy a box frame, mount a picture from the trip to the back wall and have the glass sitting on the "floor" of the frame? Maybe even glue down some sand underneath it.
I know I responded positively to rechelle's comment, but that isn't the type of project that I want to do.
ReplyDeleteJohn Waters will not be displayed in the bathroom (though I'm sure he would find that highly amusing and not insulting at all.) I'm thinking a shadowbox, but what else to put in there with the dollar?
John Waters would SO be happy to be displayed in a bathroom (but yeah, not the best environment for protecting the autograph).
ReplyDeleteIf you want to really protect it, I think professional framing would be best (maybe a little expensive though). I always use cheap frames from Target and IKEA, so I suppose that's another option.
Hi there! I have been following your blog for a while now and love to see the work you are doing on your home. This is a tough display question! My instant association with paper money is lai si. If you found one with a design that matched your decor, it could be part of an admittedly random shadow box display. :) Or perhaps a shadowbox of nifty things the same color as the dollar?
ReplyDeleteCould you frame the dollar with a photo of John Waters? If you use a shadow box you could include some props to represent his films (and no, I'm not suggesting a fake plastic dog poo...)
ReplyDeleteI like seeing beach glass in glass hurricane candleholders or vases as a base to hold in the candle or flowers. I know that's not terribly original, I just think it's a pretty way to display it.
ReplyDeleteSorry, if we're talking about John Waters, then you've gotta go over the top. I don't have a specific suggestion, unfortunately, but it's got to be as kitchy as it gets. If you use a regular frame or shadowbox, then whatever picture goes behind it should be absurd...an alligator, a neon photo of the Pope, condoms...I don't know...but anything understated or elegant simply won't do.
ReplyDeleteNot too long ago, I saw where someone made a mosaic table top out of beach glass and then grouted it. It was pretty attractive. You could incorporate co-ordinating colored beads and ceramics with it, too.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog!It is really inspiring. Keep it up.
